We went to this church for about three years and have no specific Anglican background other than having grown up Methodist. The service at this church is standard high church.
Where this particular church falls down is in its support of children's ministry. I would not recommend this church if you have children. As its leadership has changed, CTK has become heavy handed in not allowing the children's director to continue with very successful ministries. Father Thom McGee is almost antagonistic toward modern views of children's ministry, requiring small children to sit through service based upon a single study showing that children are more likely to attend services as adults if they attend as children. He and the leadership at CTK also have not otherwise continued support of what had been an attractive, vivacious children's ministry, including a puppet ministry and a small childrens service for about 30 minutes before attending the main service, providing vital teaching to kids at their level.
The strategy seems particularly out of touch and paternalistic. The church is aloof of current trends in children's ministry, which is to provide more children's education at their level rather than less. It is a one size fits all approach, and almost assumes a 18th-19th century view of childhood, which is that they are small adults. It neither incorporates a modern view of child psyche nor helps the parents get through what can, in fact, be a trying time during worship.
Rather than moving forward, the Anglican church, and more specifically CTK, seems to be taking a step backward at a time when they need growth. They are resting on laurels of church tradition rather than seeing trends that can take them into the next decades on solid footing.
While I would like to further understand the impetus behind the current decisions, I'm not sure that the reasons matter as much as the effect, which is profound. The church does not discuss the decisions it makes. It is very much a hierarchical approach.Added March 31, 2017 by Scott Carter
